Peninsula False Bay
from Muizenberg to the Cape of Good Hope

(a) Muizenberg
Muizenberg at False Bay was for a long time a famous seaside resort for wealthy South Africans. Some historic houses have been renovated. The endless sandy beaches are still attractive for the water enthusiast. Old and colourful little Victorian shacks are a characteristic for the beaches along False Bay. The locals own them and store their “beach equipment” in them.

(b) Seal Island - Seals, Sharks and Whales
The water of False Bay is influenced by the warm Indian Ocean (Mocambique-Agulhas current). Especially in summer time the water temperature here can be 5°C warmer than on the Atlantic side of Cape Peninsula which is only effected by the cold Benguela current.
Right in the middle of False Bay lies Seal Island. This island is named after a huge seal colony. Boat trips to Seal Island are offered! With a bit of luck you might also have an encounter with the great white shark. This species is also prevalent in False Bay.
From June to October you'll also have the chance to spot Southern Right Whales here. These mammals spend the winter months here. During this time there calves are born.

(c) Boyes Drive & Kalk Bay
Travelling from Muizenberg further South towards the Cape you can also use Boyes Drive along the hills. From here you have fantastic views all over the False Bay to Cape Hangklip in the East.
If you like to visit Cecil John Rhodes Museum you should take the coastal road. The Victorian shacks you come across at the sandy beaches of Muizenberg are worth to take a photo.

(d) Simon's Town and the penguins of Boulders Beach
Simon's Town, since more then 200 years the most important harbour of the South African navy, is the last town before you reach Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. Travellers can stop in one of nice restaurants and shops and enjoy the victorian architecture. Just South of Simonstown you can visit the Jackass Penguins of Boulders Beach. Several platforms along the beach offer superb penguin watching!

On your way to Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve you might have an encounter with baboons. Don't feed these lovely creatures. Better watch their teeth. They'll give you an idea of the fact that these are dangerous animals. Baboons are always hunting for food and try to get it from tourists. Sometimes you might be able to watch their trophies - fruit, tins and sometimes cooler boxes.
