The name Karoo means “thirstland” in the language of the Khoi-Khoi. This is the vast semi desert in the interior of South Africa.

Almost half of the surface of Southern Africa belongs to the Karoo. In higher altitudes -like in the Free State- open grassland prevails. The Southern Karoo , however, is a semi desert with little rainfall and sparse vegetation. Before windmills were invented, this area was the home of game used to arid climates like Springbok, Kudu, Oryx and ostrich. Today the Karoo is known for its vast sheep farms.

The Karoo National Park just outside Beaufort West offers magnificent landscape and good opportunities for game viewing. Here you can discover the Karoo in your own vehicle or in guided 4x4 tours.
