Zambezi River

In the language of the local tribes Zambezi means "giant river". And indeed this mighty river, the largest in Southern Africa, runs 2.600km from its spring in Zambia to the shores of the Indian Ocean in Mozambique.

upper Zambezi, approx. 1.300km to Victoria Falls
the spring of Zambezi river is Northwestern Zambia close to the borders to Zaire and Angola. From there it runs into Angola and back to Zambia and towards Namibia. Some 80km before Victoria Falls the Zambezi forms the natural borders of 4 countries at once, namely Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Angola. From there this river is the border from Zambia and Zimbabwe until it reaches Mozambique further East.
central Zambezi, approx. 800km
this part of Zambezi river is known for its beautiful African sceneries. Two major dams produce electricity for millions of people: Kariba Dam (280km long, 30km wide) between Zimbabwe and Zambia and Cabora Bassa in Mozambique.
lower Zambezi, approx. 500km
flows through the Mozambiquan Lowveld into the Indian Ocean
