Shewula Mountain Camp - community based tourism...Culture...

accommodation, activities...

The kingdom of Swaziland is known for its rich cultural heritage. We would only like to give you an insight into two important annual events:

The Incwala or “first fruits’ ceremony” takes place in December or January. Groups of learned men (bemanti) trek over the country and bring plants, river water and foam from the Indian Ocean to the Royal Kraal. The king thanks his fellowmen, dances before the people and eats a pumpkin. This is the sign for the Swazi people to be allowed to eat from the new crop.

The Umhlanga or reed dance takes place in August or September. Marriageable young Swazi women from all over the country journey to the Royal Kraal in order to help repair the queen mother’s house. The festival is a showcase of potential wives for the king. The Umhlanga draws the nation together to remind the people of their relationship and obligations to the king.

Mantenga Village
The Swazi Culture (language, dance, music…) can be explored in Ligugu Lemaswati Cultural Village (Mantenga Village). This village was built in a strictly traditional way using only natural materials. The idea behind was to maintain the tradition for the following generations and to show it to visitors.

Shewula Mountain Camp
This tourism project was initiated by the women of the area (close to Mlawula National Park) and is close to the Mozambiquean border post of Lomahasha. The camp is situtated on a gravel road off MR3 just 8km from the border post. Rustic huts can be booked, meals can be provided.
